TOURIST INFORMATION
For several years Genoa has embarked on a path of redefining its brand, to position itself internationally as a smart, dynamic city projected towards the future but with solid roots of history, culture and tradition behind it, linked above all to the strong relationship with its sea, and other particularities of the territory such as the quality of life and the mildness of the climate.
Genoa is proposing for the right mix it can offer between modernity, sustainability and inclusiveness, for the ability to combine the varied, sometimes even contrasting aspects that characterize it, for its being an authentic, lively city on a “human scale”, where it is stimulating to work but it is also pleasant to live, in all seasons of the year.
Genoa places itself as a destination of excellence on the Italian and international tourist market as an Urban Destination, able to offer many different atmospheres: the historical, artistic and architectural heritage, as Genoa can boast one of the largest medieval historical centers in Europe and a UNESCO site, “The New Roads and the Palazzi dei Rolli system”; the picturesque landscape typical of the Ligurian Riviera can be enjoyed in the seaside villages of Boccadasse, Nervi and Pegli; the Aquarium boasts the largest exhibition in Europe of aquatic biodiversity; the large museum heritage offers the opportunity to visit up to 33 museums within 10km ranging from art, world cultures to natural sciences.
Moreover, Genoa has many green park areas and ancient Villas to visit not far from the City Center, reachable by the sea, by battle or by train.
To discover all this beauty, it is possible to live the “Rolli Experience”, a unique and immersive experiential weekend which provides a rich offer of exclusive activities among the prestigious Palazzi dei Rolli, ranging from art, culture and good food.
Since the Middle Ages and then since the time of Christopher Columbus, Genoa has been one of the most important maritime and port centers in Europe and continues to be the Italian capital of yachting.
The sea is its most authentic dimension.
The values of the city are those of sea people, and are also founding values of the culture of sport: pride, strength, dedication, authenticity, teamwork, respect for nature.
Genoa is therefore the ideal venue for sporting events.
In June 2023, it was the first city in Italy to host the final stage of The Ocean Race, a legendary event, which together with the Olympics and America’s Cup represents the grand slam of sailing and which celebrates its 50th anniversary.
In 2024, a full calendar of sporting, competitive and amateur events is planned for athletes, young and old: at least 1,000 events in the metropolitan area of Genoa of which 50 international, 350 national, 50 Para Sports, 250 cultural events, among these the main important event will be the 2024 World Rowing Coastal Championship & Beach Sprint in the first half of September.

According to the Köppen climate classification, the city of Genoa is located in the Mediterranean climate zone (Csa), which is characterized by mild seasons. The dominant subtropical high pressure systems bring dry and hot summers, whereas winters enjoy moderate temperatures and changeable, rainy weather due to the polar front.
Gusty winds more often occur in Genoa during winter when the northerly winds affect the Liguria region. As these are katabatic winds, which are usually accompanied by high pressure and clear skies, they are present when the Low pressure system moves eastwards towards the Balcanic Peninsula. When the Low is centered over the Gulf of Genoa (called Genoa Low), the northerlies bring cooler air from the Pianura
Padana through the two main valleys of the city associated with unsettled conditions.

The following wind data are taken from the weather station in
Genova / Sestri located at 44.42°N / 8.85°E (3m asl).
This further diagram shows the range of monthly wind intensity with the observed daily mean wind speed and the two-third range variation of weekly means within the bars.
It is clear from the diagrams that the average wind speed is higher in the winter/spring seasons.
Looking at the wind rose for Genoa showing the percentage frequency of winds from the indicated direction, we notice that the prevailing winds during the year are those coming from NNE and from S.
During the winter season the strongest winds are associated with the passage of weather fronts and Lows. For this reason N’ly & NNE’ly winds are the most frequent.
In the summer coastal breezes prevail from SSW’ly & NNE’ly directions. The morning breeze can reach also 15-20 Kts, especially during clear skies.
The windiest days occur in particular in December and in January.
The statistics are related to the main WMO station of Genova / Sestri that is to the W of the area of the cruise terminal, however we can confirm that the peak of the winds can be stronger than 45 Kts at least once a year during the strongest storms, without considering the real effects of the thunderstorms.
Furthermore there are mainly two types of extreme events which affect the Ligurian sea and in particular the Port of Genoa:
• When thunderstorms occur in the area, the Port of Genoa can experience gusty winds from unpredictable directions, peaking also more than 45 Kts. For example, on 14th October 2016, due to the passage of an intense squall line, strong gusts affected the Genoa area and in particular the E’rn sector of the Liguria region.
• Increase of the SW’ly swell due to the strong SW’ly winds spreading from the Balearics towards the Ligurian sea generating, sustained by a deep Low across the Bay of Biscay. In this case the criticism is the sea state at the entrance of the harbour.
