With over twenty years of experience in “flat water” rowing, Fernanda Ferreira has decided to take on the ocean waves in search of new thrills at the Beach Sprint Finals in Genoa. “I come from flat water, I’ve been rowing since I was 12, so for more than twenty years,” says the Brazilian athlete. “The sea is more unpredictable, there’s more adventure, and I think it’s better in terms of the environment too, it’s friendlier. Everyone in flat water rowing is more serious, while with the sea and the waves, people are happier and have more fun”.
For Ferreira, the Beach Sprint is “a great opportunity to train in running, which I really enjoy. In Brazil, we have many beautiful beaches, so we have lots of places to row with amazing views, and we train among tourists”.
Genoa may not be Copacabana, but do you like the city and the beach? “It’s a beautiful historical city with many lovely buildings, and Italians are very friendly. The beach is different from the ones we know; here, there are many pebbles. It’s nice to see new things, I’m really enjoying this experience”.
Ferreira has only one regret for this world championship: “We’re here for the Beach Sprint, in the mixed four. I would have loved to participate in the Endurance race, but it wasn’t possible. I think the more races you do on the sea, the better, because you get to know the water and the coast better”.
