Genoa 2024 WRCCBSF: Florijn, a Family of Athletes at the Beach Sprint Finals

The Beach Sprint Finals are a family affair for them: there are no fewer than four Florijns at the event, starting with their father Ronald, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, who is accompanying his children Finn, Karolien, and Beer. Since talent runs in the family, they too have earned many medals at the Olympics, World Championships, and Europeans, and are contributing to the impressive results of the entire Dutch rowing movement.

What is it like to experience this with your entire family?

Finn: It’s great; I think it’s the first time we’re all competing together. Sometimes it’s a bit annoying (laughs) because I share a room with my brother and we argue a bit, but most of the time it’s fun.

Beer: It’s fun; sometimes it’s annoying with Finn because he tells me to calm down and rest while I want to go full speed. It’s been great to compete with my brother, and it’s fantastic that the whole family is here to support me.

Karolien: I’m happy that we can keep an eye on Beer. I like it; it’s nice to be here in Italy with such good company.

Who is the best rower among you?

Karolien: Obviously, it’s me (laughs). Seriously, I think we each have our own strengths. Beer is the only one who has moved forward, but we all have our strengths, and what matters most is that we enjoy this sport.

Beer: As Karolien said, each of us has our specialties. Finn has a great eye for rowing technique; with just one video, he can provide a very accurate analysis. Karolien has a better feel for the boat, but both of them are great rowers.

Finn: Talking about Coastal Rowing, Beer is the best; he has more experience. In classic rowing, I think Karolien is the best. And I hope to be the best in the technical part.

What advice would you give to your siblings?

Finn: To enjoy this experience and relax.

Beer: I’d also advise them to enjoy it; it’s the best thing in sports.

Karolien: In Coastal Rowing, you need to go with the flow; many things can happen. You have to go with the flow and enjoy the experience.

Is this World Championship also an opportunity for a family vacation? Will you explore the city together?

Karolien: Certainly, we’re doing our best here on the beach, but outside we’re together, exploring the city. It’s beautiful here in Genoa, and the weather is perfect.

Beer: Certainly, it’s the first family vacation in a long time, so we need to make the most of it.

Finn: It’s very nice; yesterday was Beer’s birthday, and we celebrated it. It’s great to be here in the city together.
